A Summer Full of Opportunities

Discover the world with Summer Schools, intensive short programmes at foreign universities

Whether due to time constraints, financial considerations or other personal circumstances - not every student can commit to a stay abroad lasting several months. This is where Summer Schools come into play: a flexible, cost-effective and intensive educational alternative that opens doors to new cultures and knowledge. In a short space of time, you can immerse yourself in a subject area, broaden your academic horizons, discover new learning methods and at the same time build an international network and get to know a new country. Paul, Linus, Celine, Frederik, Joel, Moesha, Charlotte, Benjamin, Marvin and many other HSBA students simply gave it a try this summer. They reported live on our Instagram channel about how they liked it. In the highlights  you can check out their stories and get inspired.

“I decided in favour of the Summer School because it offers the opportunity to gain an intensive insight into a new country, a new culture and a new business location in a short space of time," says Lukas about his Summer School at UNNC in Ningbo, China. "The combination of on-site company visits, lecture-style events and excursions offers a great opportunity to broaden your horizons and get to know numerous international students from all over the world. I particularly enjoyed the summer school in Ningbo at the UNNC. It was a very well-structured programme to get to know many Chinese cultural elements and economic approaches, which was rounded off by working on a scientific research question and final presentations of the results. Afterwards, there was the opportunity to continue travelling through China and Asia alone or in smaller groups. I can only recommend anyone to apply for a Summer School if a semester abroad is not (or no longer) possible for whatever reason.”

“We can highly recommend a Summer School, you get to know so many people from all over the world and have the unique experience of living abroad for a while without having to go away for a whole semester, " is what Linus and Celine say about their stay at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

"For me, the Summer School was exactly the right choice,“ enthuses Paul, who spent his summer at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. "You have the opportunity to get to know a city and university life in a completely different way, make new friends from all over the world and further your education with a wide range of courses in your field of interest - without having to be away from home for a whole semester. And I was even able to get some credits recognised..“

There are a large number of courses offered by renowned universities around the world (). It is therefore important to consider in advance what goal you want to pursue. Do you want to study a specific subject in depth? Or familiarise yourself with a completely new subject that is not offered at HSBA? Or test a specific university for a later stay?

Advantages at a glance:

  • Short, intensive stay abroad
  • Less expensive than a traditional semester abroad
  • Lower hurdles compared to a semester abroad
  • Summer School as a test for studying abroad
  • The opportunity to take courses from other subject areas or expand your background knowledge in your field
  • Credit transfer is often possible
  • You meet new people from all over the world and develop your intercultural skills
  • You get to know the country and its people better than on holiday

As a rule, the courses last between one and five weeks and usually take place during the lecture-free period of the universities offering the courses. For Bachelor students at HSBA, the lecture-free period in June/July/August (depending on the study programme) is ideal.

Summer Schools usually have to be self-financed. However, there are possibilities to get support for the short stay abroad, e.g. through the DAAD programme PROMOS.
